Hutchinson Island Field Trip

By this date, fall migration is in its last weeks and many winter residents have already settled in. This location provides an interesting mix of birds due to a diverse habitat that includes grasslands, wooded areas, and wetlands. Several rare species have shown up here this year and last. We will explore this restricted access area surrounded by countless acres of freshwater wetlands, ponds, and hardwood forests on the school’s private property. Welcomed by the school administration to bird this private school property, Ogeechee Audubon will explore the nature sanctuary affectionately known to the school as “Eden”.

Ogeechee Audubon looks forward to forging a joint relationship with the school to conduct periodic bird surveys on the property on a scheduled basis.

Meet at school parking at 8 AM. The gates will be opened at that time.

Tybee Island North Beach Field Trip and Shorebird Survey

This is the time when we find the first returning shorebirds, Caspian Terns, migrating Black Terns, and lots of begging juveniles, Laughing Gulls, Royal Terns, Sandwich Terns, and more, as well as a few early migrant songbirds. Meet at Jaycee Park at 5:30pm to carpool over to Polk Street.

Fort Stewart

Meet Wildlife Biologist Larry Carlile at the Love’s Truck Stop in Richmond Hill (SW corner of I-95 Exit 90). We will leave the truck stop at 8:30 am and travel to a Fort Stewart Red-Cockaded Woodpecker cluster to observe RCWO adults and chicks inside the nest cavity. We may need to walk up to 0.25 miles to access the RCWO cavity tree cluster. We’ll also visit bottomland hardwood habitat associated with the Canoochee River. If you have an SUV type vehicle or truck with good clearance. please bring it as it will be needed. We will carpool at Love’s Truck Stop for those who do not have a vehicle with good clearance. Also, sturdy shoes (no open toes, boots/hiking boots preferred) and long pants are recommended. It will probably be buggy, so bug spray, long sleeves, and hats are a good idea.
